Now that we know some interesting things about Drake let’s explore his popular nicknames.
1. Champagne Papi
“Champagne Papi” is a popular nickname and the Instagram handle of Drake. Many fans point to 2011–13 as when Drake adopted this persona. During this period, Drake’s style and music became influenced by the culture of the West Indies. The flamboyant dress sense of the men there, often referred to as “papis” also caught on with Drake. Similarly, champagne has been reported to be Drake’s drink of choice which naturally conjures up images of class and elegance.
Another popular alias for Drake is “Drizzy.” The exact origins of “Drizzy” are unclear. However, one report claims that he likely gained the nickname while collaborating with Lil Wayne, his mentor. Wayne is also known as “Weezy,” “Drizzy” seems like an affectionate nickname bestowed on Drake. Kanye West’s “Yeezy” and Chris Brown’s “Breezy” are similar variations.
“OVO” is the name of Drake’s fashion label, which fans have adopted as his nickname. The abbreviation stands for “October’s Very Own,” which signifies Drake’s birth month. The brand’s emblem is an owl.
4. 6 God
“6 God” is the title of a song by Drake and is also a fan’s favorite among Drake’s monikers. The “6” may be a reference to Toronto where he was born and is short for its area code, 416. “God” may be a form of braggadocio that is common among rappers in this case referring to himself as the God of Toronto, much like how Jay Z styles himself as the King of New York.
5. Voodoo Child
The nickname “Voodoo Child” is a self-referential one that comes from one of Drake’s songs, “Free Spirit”. The song which contains explicit lyrics has Drake rapping: “I’m Drizzy Drake to my old b*****s, Voodoo Child to my new h**s.”
6. Wheelchair Jimmy
“Wheelchair Jimmy” is a moniker that takes its name from the character Drake played as a child actor. His character, Jimmy, used a wheelchair when he was paralyzed from the waist down after he was shot in an episode in the fourth season of Degrassi.
7. Young Angel
In 2009, Drake signed up under Young Money Entertainment which was created by Lil Wayne. “Young Angel” and “Young Lion” were the nicknames Drake and Wayne used for each other during their collaborations. Drake calls himself “Young Angel” while Lil Wayne calls himself “Young Lion.”
8. Francisco Mandarin
“Francisco Mandarin” is an alter ego of Drake. According to this fansite: “Many seem to think this personality was created after being constantly harassed by inferior rappers. Aubrey, usually a very nice guy, could not take the shots anymore, and Francisco was born. Francisco is by far Aubrey’s most ignorant personality. He has an affinity for smoking hookah, dressing like a Mafia don, and is an all-around dangerous individual.”
9. Greatest Ever
In the music video for “Forever,” released in 2009, Drake towers over the camera against a massive backdrop of pyrotechnics and flashing lights. He is joined by three rappers namely, Kanye West, Lil Wayne, and Eminem.
As the chorus fades out, Drake glances downward at the three rappers and scowls: “Last name Ever, first name Greatest.” In that moment, a nickname was born.
10. Chaining Tatum
The song “Pop Style,” a line from there: “Got so many chains they call me Chaining Tatum,” which is a pun on Channing Tatum’s name, sparked hilarious reactions from fans on Twitter.
